Beskrivelse

What happens to the geographical landscape of Sicily when it becomes the scene of Selma Lagerlöf's novel Antikrists mirakler and what do these geographical and symbolical ingredients do to the literary text and its readers? And what happens when the Swedish literary text and imagination of the exotic south is translated "back" into Italian and read by those who are characterized in it? If this "Italian" novel should be put in relation to the long Germanic and Scandinavian tradition of describing Italy in romantic terms, then perhaps the Italian predilections and translations of Gösta Berlings saga and Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige, could likewise be seen in the context of an Italian imagination of the exotic north, such as this is described for example in Siri Nergaards La costruzione di una cultura. La letteratura norvegese in traduzione italiana (2004)? Inspired by theoretical perspectives from Place Studies and Translation Studies, this paper will address the novel Antikrists mirakler, its reception in Italy, and the translation of the second part of Nils Holgersson into Italian, Akka di Kebnekaise, in trying to answer the questions above.
