Workshop on digital data donations

Aktivitet: Deltagelse i arrangement eller begivenhed - typer › Deltagelse i workshop, seminar og kursus

Beskrivelse

Data donations are becoming an increasingly popular approach to study how people interact with digital platforms of various kinds. The data donation methodology can offer rich, naturalistic, and historic insights into exposure on and uses of selected platforms that can be subject to qualitative and quantitative analysis. The data donation methodology harnesses users’ right to download their personal data obtained by digital platforms as stated in the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which then are donated for research purposes. This can challenge existing power asymmetries where data traces are not merely used for commodification, but also to raise critical questions concerning digital platforms and infrastructures.
Whilst recognizing the potential of data donation methodologies, the aim of this workshop is also to highlight the technical, methodological, and ethical challenges related to DDM: How can we develop samples that we can trust? To what extent can we expect consistency in data? Is it required to have a technical platform to do data donation research? And how should data donations be complimented with other sources?
After the workshop, we will by no means have resolved the abovementioned questions, but hopefully the workshop supports recognizing that these questions are not independent for each research project and that collaboration can contribute to making DDM a viable path to pose critical questions in the Danish context and beyond.
