Beskrivelse

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are currently one of the major public health and development global challenges that particularly impact low- and middle-income countries. NCDs such as cardio vascular diseases (i.e. hypertension), cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases are responsible for 70% of deaths globally. The Danish Red Cross (DRC) has worked with NCDs as a strategic priority for several years within RCRCs competencies and mandate in health including community health and health in emergencies/humanitarian contexts. Such programmes’ focus areas include promotion of healthy lifestyles, early detection and screening, prevention of complications, and patient care and support.
Between April 2019 and March 2021, the Kenyan Red Cross Society (KRCS) with the Danish Red Cross has implemented the Project Prevention and Control of Non-communicable diseases in Imenti South, Meru County (AX 24416) in Kenya.
The immediate objective of the Project was to improve primary and secondary prevention of NCDs (Diabetes and Hypertension) through strengthening of the continuum of care and advocacy with a focus on Diabetes and Hypertension. Specific objectives/outputs of the projects were:
1. To increase NCD knowledge and practice of healthy lifestyles;
2. To improve early detection of NCD through introduction of NCD screening in the existing health care system;
3. To enhance advocacy for NCD policies at the county and national level;
4. To build the capacity of MOH and KRCS at the county and national level on management and implementation of NCD programs in Kenya.
As part of the project monitoring and evaluation system, a baseline survey was conducted in August 2019 and an endline survey is planned for September/October 2021) to measure knowledge, awareness and health outcomes of the project as reflected in the endline indicators in the LFA. It is expected that the endline survey will also examine and reflect interruptions in health care services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
