I am drawn to the natural world not only for its beauty but for the overlooked forms of life that hold surprising complexity and importance. Mosses are one of those forms for me. They are quiet and easily missed, yet have a big importance in the ecosystems they inhabit - to depths we yet have to discover. My research centers on biogenic volatile organic compounds in natural ecosystems around the world and on understanding how these exchanges shift under climate change. The places I have been and investigated in this regard range from temperate forests in Denmark to the Subarctic and the temperate rainforests of New Zealand. I particularly study mosses and the function of their associated microbes by combining it with analytical approaches such as GC-MS, PTR-TOF-MS and controlled climate treatments to investigate both the production and consumption of VOCs. Through this work I hope to uncover the role of mosses as both sources and buffers of volatile compounds, and bring attention to their underestimated role on our planet.
