Jeg er professor i biodiversitet og leder af Center for Makroøkologi, Evolution og Klima (CMEC) samt Villum Center for Global Mountain Biodiversity ved Globe Institute, Københavns Universitet.
Biodiversitet og makroøkologi er omdrejningspunktet for min forskning, hvor jeg bl.a. undersøger, hvad der bestemmer udbredelsen og mangfoldigheden af livet på Jorden. Med fire professorater i Danmark, Storbritannien og Kina har jeg som førende forsker flere end 400 offentliggjorte videnskabelige artikler om biodiversitet bag mig, herunder 25 i førende tidsskrifter som Science og Nature. Ud over biodiversitet og makroøkologi udfører jeg også forskning inden for økonomi, klima og menneskers sundhed.
Jeg har omfattende erfaring på globalt, regionalt og nationalt plan med videnskabs- og politikrelaterede aktiviteter, herunder rådgivning af beslutningstagere i Folketinget og ministerierne, nogle af Danmarks største virksomheder og internationale institutioner som UNEP, IPCC, FAO og Verdensbanken vedrørende spørgsmål om biodiversitet. Derudover er jeg medlem af regeringens Biodiversitetsråd og har fungeret som videnskabelig rådgiver for formandskabet for Den Europæiske Union i etableringen af den tværstatslige science-policy platform for biodiversitet og økosystemtjenester (IPBES) i 2011-2012. Jeg leder i dag det danske koordinationskontor, IPBES i Danmark, på vegne af de danske universiteter.
Jeg blev valgt som medlem af Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab i en alder af 41 år, og er blevet udnævnt som en "Highly Cited Researcher" af Clarivate. I 2019 blev jeg tildelt den årlige pris for forskning inden for naturvidenskab af Dansk Magisterforening, i 2012 Villum Kann Rasmussens Årspris for Teknisk og Videnskabelig Forskning, i 2010 EliteForsk-prisen. Endelig er jeg modtager af Ridderkorset af Dannebrogordenen (2020).

En af de ledende kræfter som videnskabelig rådgiver for EU-formandskabet i opbygningen af det transparente kvalitetskontrol- og peer-review-system, der nu bruges af FN's biodiversitetspanel (IPBES) til at kvalitetskontrollere de globale videnskabelige IPBES-rapporter baseret på tusindvis af videnskabelige artikler og med deltagelse af tusindvis af forskere.
Jeg har undervist og afholdt forelæsninger på >35 kurser på tværs af fem fakulteter samt vejledt >20 bachelorprojekter, >27 kandidatprojekter, >33 ph.d.-projekter, >37 postdocs, inkl. 10 Marie Curie-forskere og >11 adjunkter.
Jeg har desuden været med til at udvikle >10 bachelor-, kandidat- og ph.d.-kurser, og har været med i udviklingen af den tværinstitutionelle og tværfaglige kandidatuddannelse i klimaforandringer og kandidatuddannelsen i naturforvaltning. Endelig har jeg været medstifter og meddirektør for Danish Universities International School of Biodiversity Sciences (ISOBIS) fra 2001-2007.
