February 6th 1992: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), RVAU, Copenhagen, Denmark.

September 11th 2000: PhD (Veterinary Epidemiology). The Royal Danish Veterinary and Agricultural University (RVAU, now “University of Copenhagen”). Title of thesis: “Subclinical infection with Salmonella enterica in Danish slaughter pig herds. Prevalence and risk factors.”

August 2003: Diplomate of the ECVPH (European College of Veterinary Public Health)

June 2006: Diplomate of the ECPHM (European College of Porcine Health Management)

Previous positions

February 1992 - July 1992: Small animal practice, Copenhagen small animal hospital, Veterinary clinic of Avedøre.

August 1992 - June 1994: Veterinary officer, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries (MFAF), Veterinary Service, Department of Preventive Medicine and Disease Control, Copenhagen, Denmark. Main area: Zoonoses, especially Salmonella. Implementation of EU directives and ad hoc advisory service for Danish veterinary and agricultural authorities and ministries (Salmonella prevalence, surveillance program, diagnostics, serotypes).

June 1994 - February 2001: Scholarship from the Danish Research Academy. Workplace: DTU-Vet, Department of Pathology and Epidemiology. Ph.D. student at RVAU, Department of Animal Science and Animal Health. Following PhD: Post doc / Research epidemiologist. Areas: Intestinal pathogens in Danish pig herds - prevalence and risk factors. Salmonella surveillance, swine and cattle. Epidemiological supervision and assistance in various projects - usually study design, data management/validation, statistical analyses and reports. Ad hoc advisory service for Danish veterinary and agricultural authorities and ministries (intestinal diseases, prevalence and infection dynamics in pig herds, diagnostic testing).

December 2000 - May 2002: Danish Veterinary Institute (DVI, now DFVF), Zoonosis Centre. Research epidemiologist. Areas: Pharmaco-epidemiology – development, maintenance and research in the project VetStat. Ad hoc advisory service for Danish veterinary and agricultural authorities and ministries (veterinary antimicrobial usage).

May 2002 – June 2005: Veterinary epidemiologist in LVK (private practice, mainly swine). Area: Research, data analysis and advisory in pigherds - management factors/frequency of disease/drug use. Utilisation of register-data – Vetstat, Zoonosis db, CHR-GLR, “LandmandsPortalen”, measures of efficacy and status reports. Clinical trials and field studies – drugs, vaccines etc. Research and development of advisory tools for Pig Practitioners.

November 2003 – June 2005: Part time data manager/Clinical trial advisor, DakoCytomation. Area: Diagnostic tests, cancer research. Design, project description, preparation of study protocols and participation in meetings (for FDA approval), databases, data handling, analyses, reports and presentations

June 2005 – present: Associated Professor, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Section Animal Welfare and Health. Head of Research group “Data and Modelling” since 2024.

PI of the VetStat cluster (part of the Veterinary Contingency Plan and Advisory Service for the Danish Veterinary and Food Council)

Research and Advisory Service within the areas: Diseases and production of pigs and antimicrobial usage (research based on Vetstat). Ad hoc advisory service for Danish veterinary and agricultural authorities and ministries (notifiable diseases, e-learning, veterinary antibiotic usage).

March 2001- present: Reviewer for the journals Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Porcine Health Management and Epidemiology and Infection. Member of editorial board of Preventive Veterinary Medicine April 2004-2011

August 2008 - present: Board member of the Danish Pig Levy Fund (“Svineafgiftsfonden”; Budget 180 mill. Dkr per year).

Mulige interessekonflikter

Helle Stege is a board member of the pig Levy Foundation. Further she has collaboration with industry including being supervisor for industrial PhD students. This includes different branches of Danish pig production and the pharmaceutical industry.
