Kort præsentation

Lasse Gliemann is Deputy Head of Department and Associate Professor at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports and is heading the  Women in Healthy Transition. His research focuses on understanding the physiological mechanisms of cardiovascular health and disease and have a particular focus on women during the menopausal transition. He studies the ways by which physical activity and exercise training can improve cardiovascular function and utilizes various invasive and non-invasive methodologies to explore how exercise impacts blood clot density, vascular and cardiac function, and muscle capillarization. His interest lays in the broad range from “molecular mechanisms” to “whole humans in the society” and thus have extensive cross disciplinary research activities.

Gliemann has authored over 85 research outputs, including journal articles, reviews, and editorials. His recent publications include studies on lifelong physical activity habits and vascular and cardiac function in postmenopausal women, and on the impact of timing of exercise training interventions in relation to menopause. He collaborates extensively with researchers and institutions globally, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in his field.

Scientific publications and selected outreach

Orcid ID: 0000-0002-0382-2523

I have published 85 peer-reviewed articles (50 in the past 5-year period). 22 as first, 15 last author, 35 as corresponding. Please see full list of publications.

Proceedings >20, h-index 26 (Scopus 06/2025), 29 (WoS 06/2025), i10-index: 46 (google scholar 06/2025), citations: 3.079 (Scopus 06/2025)

I have been invited speaker and co-organizer of cardiovascular symposiums at leading conferences like Experimental Biology, Europhysiologica and European College of Sports Science.

I was awarded 1st place in the Early Investigator Prize 2013 by The Journal of Physiology.

I serve as peer reviewer and guest editor for high-ranking journals, including The Journal of Physiology, American Journal of Physiology, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nature and Free Radical Research.

Scientific focus

My contribution to science is centered around the highly advanced methods for invasive human experiments that I have worked with since my start in research combined with cross disciplinary studies. I have contributed significantly to understand by which mechanisms human ageing and lifestyle related diseases are affecting cardiovascular function. This has given me the possibility to contribute to science with work that combine findings raging from vascular molecular mechanisms to larger isolated vascular systems up to integrated vascular physiology in its essence in humans. I have a special focus on the cardiovascular system in women and especially in postmenopausal women, as this is widely understudied and of greatest importance for science and the public. In these studies, the crossdisciplinarity is of outmost importance, as menopause cannot be understood without great appreciation of interaction between physiology, psychology and sociology.

Funding

Since 2014 I have received grants for 48.8 mio DKK for smaller and lager projects from, among other, The Danish Council for Independent Research, “danmark”, the Lundbeck foundation, The Ministry of Culture – Sports Science and the Innovation foundation Denmark. This includes larger grants; two of +DKK 5 mio. and one DKK 15 mio.

Collaborations

I have developed a large network of collaborators nationally and internationally and I currently hold a position in the management committee of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology – Network for Research in Vascular Ageing (CA18216). I supervise two double degree PhD students from Univ. British Colombia, Canada and Gent Univ., Belgium.

Management, supervision and project administration

I currently act as supervisor for 4 and co-supervisor for 2 PhD-students, 1 post doc and 1 assistant professor. In the past, 4 PhD students have successfully been completed, 2020 (now at NovoNordisk), 2022 (now post doc in different lab) 2023 (now assistant prof. in my lab) and 2024 (now post doc in different lab). I consistently supervise a number of master and bachelor students (~5-10/year) working on the research projects. I serve as external censor on the other Danish universities, and I act as both chair and opponent for national and international PhD defenses.

I have served as scientific reviewer for larger grant programs, including The Global Cardiovascular Research Funders Forum.

I have completed the courses “Project and Research Management”, “LUKU - Leading Research” and “Supervision of PhD students”. I have led a large number of research projects and have solid expertise in project management. I routinely manage project planning, execution, dissemination and economy on several projects.

I have been appointed section head (2022-2023) and is currently deputy head of department (2023-)

I have served as vice chair both in the department- and faculty SCIENCE Collaboration Committee and member of the UCPH Collaboration Committee. I am currently member of The Academic Council (SCIENCE) and The Senate (UCPH). I have been in the staffing committee of both scientific faculty staff, for head of department and for positions in the deanery as well as the appointing body for the University Board. I have been union representative at the department and for the ~4000 scientific staff at the Faculty of SCIENCE.
