I study the interface between work, health and environment. Through extensive fieldwork in India, my research conducted over the last decade, analyzes how socio-economic inequality impacts people’s pursuit of healthy life, housing and work. I adopt ethnographic, participatory research methods with working class communities and write for both academic and popular media.
From April 2025, I am co-leading a workpackage on social science and public health reseach on health workers in India and Kenya. The workpackage includes a PhD and a Postdoctoral project in the two countries respectively, both of which I am co-supervising. The larger project titled Partnership for Education of Health Professionals is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Between 2022 and 2025, I was postdoctoral researcher on the Independent Research Fund project 'Disaster Risk Creation in Urban Resettlement Processes'. I conducted ethnographic fieldwork with populations displaced in the aftermath of the 2005 floods in Mumbai. My research examines the long term consequences of the slum rehabilitation housing policy, and its particular impacts on peoples' sense of home, wellbeing and work.
Prior to my employment at the Global Health Section, I was an activist and anthropologist at a labor rights organization in India called Aajeevika Bureau (2019-2022). During this time, I conducted indepth, ethnographic research studies on work and health with colleagues in field offices across India. Some of our published work includes research on injury and finger loss, fire safety, impact of the coronavirus pandemic and legal provisions for workers' health and safety. During this time, I also regularly published in popular media and presented research in public fora.
I did my PhD at Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (2014 - 2019). In my doctoral project, I examine how people facing lack of stable employment over the long term encounter, resist and shape crises of work, health and wellbeing. I collected oral histories and conducted ethnographic fieldwork over fifteen months across the megalopolis of Mumbai: finding and following workers in different slum neighborhoods, collective organizations and trade unions.
