PharmD, MSc. PhD fellow
Postboks 2099, Øster Farimagsgade 5, 1014 København K
Sara Almeida is a PhD fellow in Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in infectious disease epidemiology. Her research is primarily focused on the epidemiology of diarrheal diseases in low-income urban settings, particularly in the context of climate-induced displacement. Sara's current PhD work, embedded in the WatScarce project, investigates the impact of water scarcity on pathogen transmission among climate-displaced migrants and established residents in low-income urban communities in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This project aims to uncover new insights into transmission routes for hygiene-related pathogens and develop effective strategies for climate change adaptation.
Sara is also currently co-coordinating the course Health in Emergencies and Refugee Health part of the Master of Disaster Management programme, offered at the University of Copenhagen.
Sara has a solid background in public health research, having previously worked as a research assistant at the Global Health Section, University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Center for Disaster Research (COPE). Her work at COPE involved conducting research on cholera, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), and diarrheal disease transmission. She has collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to design research projects and contribute evidence-based insights to inform public health policies and interventions.
Sara Almeida holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Lisbon and a Master of Science in Parasitology from the University of Copenhagen. With the research from her master’s thesis, Sara has received the Young Scientist Award at the DSP Spring Symposium 2016, awarded by the Danish Society for Parasitology & Danish Society for Tropical Medicine and International Health.
