Abstract
"In Chapter 11, Christina Neumayer discusses how the techno-commercial architectures of platforms [...] shape the visibility or invisibility of particular societal perspectives in online communication. Building on classical communication theory, she makes a basic distinction between content, form, and reception. Translating this classical conceptual scheme to the online environment, she focuses on activists’ struggles for public attention. The research on these struggles suggests that social media data have become a rich source on political protest. At the same time, a lot of data remain out of sight and, consequently, particular perspectives remain invisible." (Noordegraaf & Poell)
