Abstract

The paper describes education of non-Kalaallisut speaking Avanersuarmiut children in Qaanaaq by looking at national tests and final exams from the public schools in Kalaallisut, Danish, and English. Despite language difficulties at the start of schooling, children eventually get scores comparable to those of Kalaallisut-speaking children. However, because of few Danish and English speakers, the children get very low scores in Danish and English. After finishing school and moving to other places in Greenland, they struggle with Kalaallisut, Danish and English, and endure stigmatizing ideologies. Nevertheless, these learners start over again and get an education.
