Abstract
This paper presents an acoustic study of /ts/ in Argentine Danish. It shows that frication phase of Argentine Danish /ts/ is highly effected by a following rounded vowel. It also shows that this is significantly more the case in the isolate Argentine Danish settlement Eldorado than in the settlements on the Pampa and in Buenos Aires. A comparison with Standard Danish as spoken in Denmark showed that Argentine Danish shows a more generalized pattern of co-articulation. The results indicate that Argentine Danish in this respect forms a new variety of Danish, and that the speech of Eldorado sticks out within this variety. The paper argues this allophonic change of /ts/ not come about through influence from Argentine Spanish but must have developed ‘internally’ in Argentine Danish.
