Abstract

Urban, industrial and agricultural activities threaten the groundwater resource that feeds the wetlands of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. The area has a complex karstic geology with high permeability features. Zones with anticipated high permeability have been identified from visual inspection of satellite imagery and have been confirmed using frequency-domain electromagnetic geophysical measurements. The high permeability zones have been incorporated into equivalent porous medium hydrological models for the catchment that encompasses the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and have been found to potentially have a significant impact on the size of the catchment and on pollution spreading patterns. The model outputs may be useful for the management of the area's water resources.
