Abstract

Aim: We investigated whether anemia and transferrin saturation were associated with mobility and physical function after hip fracture surgery. Findings: Higher hemoglobin two days after discharge was associated with better mobility two months after surgery for a hip fracture. A higher transferrin saturation two months after surgery was associated with better results at all functional tests and higher mobility. Message: Targeted intervention studies should be performed to assess whether increased iron availability in the post-operative period could improve long-term mobility and physical function.
