Abstract

Hyperthyroidism is a common diagnosis with a broad differential diagnosis. This chapter outlines the separate disorders that can lead to hyperthyroidism, focusing on whether the etiology is the overproduction of thyroid hormones from the gland, as is found in Graves disease and nodular disease, or in contrast, to the release of preformed thyroid hormones because of damage to the gland, such as is found in painless or subacute thyroiditis. In addition, significant insight will be provided into key conditions that can complicate hyperthyroidism, such as ophthalmopathy found in Graves disease and pregnancy. Finally, comprehensive reviews of diagnostic and treatment options will be provided for all causes of hyperthyroidism.
