Abstract
Air belongs to a constellation of concepts such as atmosphere, climate, gases, and clouds, whose shapes are constantly shifting in relation to scientific knowledge and technological practices. Borrowing the musical practice of “variation” as repetition with formal alteration, this chapter illuminates air’s manifold meanings by excavating sites at which air makes itself apparent in new ways: moments in the history of science, philosophy, and art, where air is captured with special clarity. Tracing an arc through theory and contemporary artistic practice, this chapter foregrounds air’s material and aesthetic performativity.
