Medieval Devotion at the Edge of Christendom: Danish Prayer Books from the Late Middle Ages

Description

As elsewhere in Europe, Books of Hours were the "medieval bestseller" in the Kingdom of Denmark at the border between the Holy Roman Empire and the northern reaches of Scandinavia. In this talk I survey Books of Hours and other devotional manuscripts from Late Medieval Denmark, where in addition to Latin and the local Danish language, prayer books can also be found in Low German, emphasizing the strong ties to the European continent and Christendom.
