At UCL, Stella was hosted by shipping expert Dr. Tristan Smith. During this time, Stella also attended the MEPC80 meeting at the IMO. This was a valuable experience as during this meeting the GHG emissions strategy of the IMO was official revised. Therefore, it allowed Stella to conduct relevant field observations on the international negotiations. Moreover, this research stay also benefitted the empirical part of Stella’s project as Dr. Smith was able to connect her to relevant actors in the field of Arctic shipping regulation. This resulted in several successful interviews for her PhD project.
