Amanda's research project compares gender discrimination laws in health care in the United States and Denmark, based on their compliance with fundamental principles of non-discrimination in health under international human rights conventions (and, to a lesser extent, those in regional human rights conventions). It takes as a starting point that women’s bodies, diseases, and health needs are subordinated in medicine, and that multiply marginalized women, such as women of color, experience more pronounced subordination. Her dissertation therefore seeks to answer whether laws in the US and Denmark capture and are accountable for discrimination from such marginalization. Based on the observations of international human rights bodies about the most salient problems in women’s health, the dissertation primarily focuses on gender discrimination in four areas: medical research; reproductive health; pain and chronic illness; and the application of algorithmic and artificial intelligence tools to medicine. Particularly for the problem of algorithmic and AI tools, both the US and Denmark have championed their use as the solution to a myriad of problems within their respective health care systems, but have not fully examined whether such application complies with human rights non-discrimination norms in health.
Amanda's legal career and research have focused on civil rights (particularly gender and race discrimination and reproductive rights), human rights, employment law, labour law, education law, constitutional law, international law, criminal law, and health law.
