Aslı works as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, CEPRI in the Shipping and Ocean Law Group (SHOC) project of Green Transition and the Law of Shipping (GreenLaSH) since April 2023. The project primarily focuses on digitalization and decarbonization in shipping from a private law perspective. Please see: https://jura.ku.dk/english/shoc/ for more detailed information on SHOC and the GreenLaSH project.
On 1 May 2024, a collaboration project of ShippingLab, SLGreen, that Aslı is a part of, received over 31 million DKK from the Innovation Fund Denmark, The Danish Maritime Fund and Lauritzen Foundation. SLGreen aims to pave the way for future green shipping. SLGreen will develop new tools to predict ship performance under realistic conditions, implement methods to optimize hull performance to avoid biofouling, monitor engine condition and wear to ensure reliable operation, introduce remote navigation systems to improve safety and efficiency, and develop solutions to enhance crew comfort on board the ships. In the following three years, Aslı will be conducting legal research alongside the empirical work of project partners to assess how law can function as an enabler rather than stifling technological development and evaluate how law can possibly be brought in line with technology and accommodate it. Aslı received a total grant of 1,694,444DKK. For more detail on SLGreen, please visit: The Danish Innovation Fund invests in new, groundbreaking ShippingLab project
Aslı formerly worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at CEPRI from May 2020 and her project predominantly focused on the management and liability aspects of the commercial implementation of remotely-controlled and autonomous ships.
Aslı has an LLM in Maritime Law with distinction from University of Exeter, UK, and she holds a PhD in Law from the same University, which she obtained in 2020. Her PhD thesis is titled 'Muddying the Water: Incorporation of Arbitration Clauses in Shipping, Insurance, and Construction Chain Contracts.' She converted her thesis into a monograph titled 'Arbitration Clauses and Third Parties' which was published in Lloyd's Arbitration Law Library in July 2023: https://www.routledge.com/Arbitration-Clauses-and-Third-Parties/Arda/p/book/9781032215006
Aslı's primary fields of research are digitalization and decarbonization in shipping, contract law, shipping law (mainly dry shipping), autonomous and remotely controlled ships from a private law perspective, digitization and digitalization in law, commercial arbitration agreements, and insurance law.
