Personal profile

Short presentation

Research areas and background

I am Professor in Political and Historical Sociology at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Social Science, Economics and Journalism, the University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik). I recieved my training from the London School of Economics (MSc and Ph.D.). Furthermore, I have a BSc from the Dept. of Political Science, University of Copenhagen.

From 1st August 2025 to 31st July 2027 I will be spending 25% of my research and teaching time at the University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik).

My research covers the following areas:

  1. State-nation relations and nationalism in Europe and in the Arctic Region
  2. Education in the Arctic Region with a special focus on Greenland
  3. Governance of natural resources in Greenland with a special focus on mining.

Research projects

From 2026 to 2030 I will lead and take active part in the research project: Experiences and Perceptions of Climate Change: A View from the Next Generation (EPIC). The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, Arctic Initiative, with a Dff-2 grant of 7.150.000 dkk (almost 1 mill Euros). The project investigates Greenlandic pupils’ relationship to climate change and the extent to which climate change is addressed in teaching – for example, in learning materials and classroom activities. To answer the question of how Greenlandic pupils experience and perceive climate change, EPIC collaborates with the University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik), the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (Pinngortitaleriffik) and UNICEF in Greenland.

Teaching and Supervision

I also lecture both at the University of Copenhagen and at the University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik) and coordinate and lecture the following courses:

  1. Organisation and Politics (UCPH)
  2. Globale and Comparative Sociological Perspectives (UCPH)
  3. Governing Natural Resouces in the Arctic (University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik)
  4. Classical sociological theory (University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik))

I supervise at Ph.D., MSc and BSc level and have supervised 5 Ph.D. dissertations to completion alongside a substantial number of MSc and BSc theses. Furthermore, I have served on a large number of assessment committees.

My office hours are Thursdays 3 pm to 4.30 pm during the Spring term 2026. The take place in 16.0.61.
