Short presentation

Christian Bueger is Professor of International Relations with a research focus on global governance and international organisation, global ocean politics and maritime security, international relations theory (in particular practice theory and international political sociology) as well as sociology of expertise.

In his current work Christian Bueger is studying political responses to maritime insecurity and the knowledge, resources, and technologies required to govern the oceans. He is the author of Understanding Maritime Security published with Oxford University Press (with Tim Edmunds).

He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Seychelles, a research fellow at the University of Stellenbosch, a honorary fellow at Cardiff University and one of the directors of the SafeSeas network of maritime security research.

Christian Bueger holds a PhD from the European University Institute (2010). Before joining Copenhagen in 2018 he was a professor at Cardiff University and visiting fellow at the National University of Singapore, the University of Stellenbosch, and a Leverhulme Fellow at the Greenwich Maritime Institute.

His research has been funded by leading foundations and grant authorities, including several grants from the Economic and Social Research Council (UK), British Academy (UK) and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since 2022 he leads the Ocean Infrastructures research group funded by the Velux Foundation. The group investigates global ocean politics in an age of infrastructure, focusing on areas such as the risks linked to shipping and marine transport (e.g., oil spills, container losses), and critical maritime infrastructure protection (e.g., wind farms, subsea data cables).

As a leading voice in the global maritime security debate, he frequently speaks at international events, including naval symposia, comments on events in the international news media, and supports stakeholders in developing their maritime security strategies. Most recently he has worked with the Indian Ocean Commission and the European Council working group on maritime security.

Further information on activities and ongoing research projects is available on Christian Bueger's Personal website.
