Personal profile

Short presentation

My main research area is natural resource governance in the Global South. In recent years I have done research in particular on Legality Verification (EU’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade Program, FLEGT), REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), and decentralized and participatory forest governance. From 2018-2022, I will be the project leader of a research project on Land Rights and Resilience in Kenya (RARE). The project focuses on how land rights and land conflicts interact with pastoralists’ climate change adaptation strategies: http://ifro.ku.dk/rare. I have experience from research and advisory services in developing countries since 1985, and have travelled and worked in South- and Southeast Asia and East Africa regularly since 1985. I have conducted several PhD courses in qualitative methods and case study research. I have supervised 9 PhD students, and almost 50 MSc theses on a variety of topics, such as Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and the establishment of windmills in Mexico; community forestry and REDD+ in Cambodia; Palm Oil and Livelihoods in Malaysia; participatory agricultural projects in Niger; and the climate change negotiations. I have also supervised bachelor projects and projects in practice. I coordinate and teach two graduate courses: Global Environmental Governance (www.geg.ku.dk), and Qualitative Methods in Agricultural Development.
