Personal profile

Short presentation

I am Associate Professor and Head of Study for the MSc Global Health programme at the Global Health Section, Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen. I have an academic background in Psychology (BA, Roskilde University, Denmark, 2006) and International Development (MA, New School, USA, 2010), and a PhD in Global Health from the Department of Public Health (University of Copenhagen, Denmark, 2018).

Using participatory, qualitative methods key research areas of mine are to contextually explore and understand toxicity and practices of intentional and unintentional poisoning by different means (pesticides, alcohol, methanol and more) and to explore practices of health care providers in the wider context of well-being, life circumstances and working conditions.

I am interested in community, health workforce and systems perspectives as well as how we communicate about health. Capacity strengthening is a central component of my research projects and more recently I also engage in research on this theme. My research is primarily conducted in East Africa (Tanzania and Kenya) and Asia (Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh) with numerours partners. Currently, in particular:

  • Strengthening health professions education institutions in India and Kenya as part of the Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) (PI)
  • Strengthening Capacity to manage and Cope with Pandemics in Ethiopia and Tanzania (SCCOPET) (Co-PI).
  • NIHR RIGHT4: Preventing deaths from acute poisoning in low- and middle-income countries (Co-I). https://www.ed.ac.uk/cardiovascular-science/nihr-acute-poisoning/pesticides

I am course leader of the MSc Global Health course 'Global Health Foundations’ and teach qualitative methods and theory, global mental health, de-colonization of Global Health, and more. I supervise thesis work in my areas of expertise, and currently supervise three PhD students.
