The Andersen group utilizes genome-wide approaches in modeling disease causality, stratifying patients for advancing diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, and novel therapeutic options. Our research is focused into 3 main project themes: i) Immunogenomics, ii) metabolism, and iii) epigenomic remodeling. The outcome of our research is to significantly guide novel treatment modalities and impact the clinic to improve patients’ outcomes.
Prof. Jesper B. Andersen received his PhD in 2006 from the Department of Molecular and Structural Biology at Aarhus University, Denmark following a joint research fellowship (2003–2007) at the University of Maryland, Department of Medicine, Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, Baltimore, USA. In 2007, Prof. Andersen joined the Section of Snorri S. Thorgeirsson at the National Cancer Institute, NIH as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2014, he moved to the Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark starting his own group with a focus on biomedical and translational research within primary liver and bile duct cancers. Prof. Andersen was tenured in 2019 and appointed full Professor in Translational Hepatology at University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2023. He has authored/co-authored more than 150 seminal papers and book chapters, submitted numerous innovation report and patents, acknowledged with several prestigious merit awards and fellowships in cancer research such as the Independent Research Fund Denmark, Medical Research for elite science in Denmark, the Danish Cancer Society Prize, the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF) startup 2015, and NNF Research Leader Program in 2022. The Andersen group’s merits include many competitive awards and grants from Danish and European funding agencies, including the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Sheila Sherlock and multiple Marie Sklodowska-Curie independent postdoctoral fellowships.
Prof. Andersen is the founder and former director of BRICs postdoc career program (PCP) and vivid mentor in numerous national and international mentor-mentee programs. He is co-founder of the European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma (ENSCCA), Global Cholangiocarcinoma Alliance, several European COST actions for Cholangiocarcinoma and Precision-BTC network, and patient outreach-focused programs within primary liver cancers. He is an active participant in the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation USA, and member of the International Cholangiocarcinoma Research Network. Prof. Andersen is past editor at Hepatology (2017-2020), Journal of Hepatology (2019-2025), and elected member of the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) communication committee and governing board.
