Main research interests

I study drug compound permeation across biological barriers and the interplay with transport proteins to improve our understanding of these barriers and how they can be overcome through drug delivery.

My research is mainly focused on the blood-brain barrier and the role of efflux transporters. To this end, we develop cell culture models that mimick the human blood-brain barrier or over-express efflux transport proteins using human stem cells or immortalized cell lines. We use these cell models to study the dynamics of substrate-transporter interactions and explore new drug delivery concepts to improve brain delivery.
