Dr. Lena Skovgaard Andersen is an Assistant Professor in Global Mental Health in the Global Health Section in the Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen. She is also the Director of the School of Global Health at the University of Copenhagen. Furthermore, she holds an appointment as an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the HIV Mental Health Research Unit in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. Dr. Andersen is a clinical psychologist specializing in evidence-based treatments for common mental disorders comorbid with chronic illness. Her research to date has mainly focused on culturally adapting evidence-based interventions for common mental disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH) in South Africa. She was the project director of a NIMH R01 funded randomized controlled trial of a nurse-administered cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention for adherence and depression in HIV in South Africa. Dr. Andersen was also a clinical member of the multidisciplinary Chronic Pain team at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Her clinical and research interests are in developing and scaling evidence-based psychological and psychosocial interventions for mental health prevention and treatment, particularly in behavioral medicine, in resource-constrained settings globally.
