Personal profile

Short presentation

I am an Associate Professor in Public Mental Health at the Department of Public Health's Section of Health Services Research. I am also part of the Center for Migration, Ethnicity, and Health (MESU). I have an academic background in psychology  (MA, University of Barcelona, 2006). I am licensed as a clinical psychologist (PIR, Hospital Universitary de Terrassa, University of Barcelona, 2010; research fellow at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (2011-2013)), and trained as a public health researcher during my PhD in Health Psychology (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Barcelona, 2015) and Postdoct at the Mailman School of Public Health at Colombia University (2015-2018).

My research focuses on improving mental health and well-being, especially among groups that are largely impacted by social inequalities. I investigate disparities in mental healthcare and work on developing and evaluating innovative solutions within the health and social sectors to prevent mental health problems and promote mental well-being. A key focus of my work is the intergenerational transmission of mental health and its complex intersections with legal, economic, social, and political systems.

This focus has led me to two primary areas of interest: motherhood and migration. These themes are reflected in my current projects, where I explore the links between motherhood, migration, and psychosocial well-being to inform the development of public mental health interventions. In my research and I use both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, allowing me to approach these issues from a comprehensive and nuanced perspective.

I am currently leading the following projects:

MATER: Improving Maternal Mental Health for Migrant Women (PI) funded by DFF

INTERGEN: Advancing Maternal health and wellbeing in contexts of migration across borders: a Pathway to Stronger Intergenerational Health (PI) funded by NNF

iCARE: Digital self-help for mothers with postpartum depression (Co-PI): Forside - iCARE

ADVANCE: Addressing mental health vulnerabilities from adolescence to older age: innovating prevention science for times of change (Co-I): ADVANCE Mental Health – University of Copenhagen

And involved in national and international projects:

CAMINANDO-MH (Co-I)  Mental Health of Latino Adolescent Who Migrate without a Parent: Understanding Risk and Identifying Resilience and Coping Strategies - Columbia University

Y-ENGAGE (Co-I): Young People’s Climate Change Engagement in Tanzania (Y-ENGAGE) – University of Copenhagen

I am the course leader of the MSc electives  Public Mental health: a global perspective - 2023/2024 and Mixed methods in Public Health. I also teach at the MSc Global Health course 'Global Health and Diseases - an Introduction and Major Challenges'. I supervise thesis work in my areas of expertise, and I currently supervise two PhD students.
