Personal profile

Current research

The Japanese system of education, especially topics relating to reform, globalization, global citizenship, sustainable development goals (SDG) and moral education (dōtoku kyōiku in Japanese). In my monograph on moral education I analyze teaching material as well as field cases I have collected to show the practice of teaching moral education and the contents and I relate this to government policies and identity politics.  Previously I have also done research on private shadow education, the juku, which offer a variety of services ranging from simple help with homework to stringent preparation for entrance examinations. They were analyzed for their impact in relation to the Japanese legal provisions stipulating equal access to receiving education, for their relations to regular schools and their self-perceived role.

I also work with Japanese monsters (yôkai) and the role they play in comtemporary Japan as well as historically. On a more general level, I focus on topics concerning the perception of ‘the other, social organization and the concept of ‘order’ on an individual level as well as the societal level.

Primary fields of research

Japans moderne samfund generelt, politik, uddannelse og populærkultur i særdeleshed.
