Matteo Bottero is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Private Governance (CEPRI) at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen (Denmark). His postdoctoral research is part of the project ‘Law and private governance for a new understanding of immigrant integration (LUII)’ funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, PI Associate Professor Silvia Adamo. On the one hand, it contributes to the definition and development of the concept of (immigrant) integration within the EU and international legal frameworks. On the other hand, it aims at improving the state of play through the promotion of a different paradigm of integration geared towards greater inclusion of immigrants into the host society. To this end, it investigates the role of private governance, and specifically non-state actors such as trade unions, in undertaking integration tasks. In this context, in spring 2022, Dr. Bottero was a Visiting Fellow at the Migration Policy Centre (MPC), Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute (EUI), Florence (Italy), under the mentorship of Professor Andrew Geddes.
Dr. Bottero obtained his PhD in Law from the University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Law, in September 2020, with a PhD thesis entitled ‘Posting of Workers in EU Law: Challenges of Equality, Solidarity and Fair Competition’, under the supervision of Professor Ulla Neergaard. In the first half of 2021, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in EU Law at the Brexit Institute and School of Law and Government, Dublin City University (Ireland), under the mentorship of Professor Federico Fabbrini. In Autumn 2018, he spent a visiting research period at the Institute for Labour Law at the Faculty of Law, KU Leuven (Belgium), under the supervision of Professor Frank Hendrickx. Dr. Bottero graduated in Law (Master's Degree) in 2013 at the University of Turin (Italy) with a Master’s thesis on ‘Freedom of Movement for Services and Gambling’, under the supervision of Professor Ornella Porchia.
Besides his research activity, Dr. Bottero has been a Lecturer in EU Law, Advanced EU Constitutional Law, and European and International Human Rights Law at the University of Copenhagen and Dublin City University. He has been lecturer at the ‘18th Migration Summer School’ at the European University Institute, and in 2022 collaborated with the European Labour Authority (ELA) as National Expert for Italy.
