Primary fields of research

Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen is an art historian and theorists working on the politics and history of the avant-garde, the politics of contemporary art and the revolutionary tradition. Author of eight books in Danish, seven in English - Crisis to Insurrection: Notes on the ongoing collapse (Minor Compositions, 2014), Playmates and Playboys at a Higher Level: J.V. Martin and the Situationist International (Sternberg, 2015), Hegel after Occupy (Sternberg Press, 2018, translated into French by Philippe Blouin and published by Édition Divergences, 2020), After the Great Refusal: Essays on Contemporary Art, Its Contradictions and Difficulties (Zero Books, 2018, translated into French by José Chatroussat and published by L'Harmattan, 2019, translated into Italian by Marcello Tarì and published by AgenziaX, 2021), Trump's Counter-Revolution (Zero Books, 2018, translated into French by Philippe Blouin and published by Éditions Divergences, 2019, and translated into Italian by Marcello Tarí and published by AgenziaX, 2019), Late Capitalist Fascism (Polity, 2021, translated into Italian by Marcello Tarì and published by Malamente, 2024, translated into Spanish by Andrea Ventimiglia and published by Marmol Izquierdo and translated into Korean by S. Kim and published by HanulMPlus, 2024) and The Refusalist International: A Theory of the New Protest Cycle (Polity, 2025) - and a long list of articles about the revolutionary tradition and modern art in journals such as e-flux journal, Multitudes, New Formations, Oxford Art Journal, Rethinking Marxism, Texte zur Kunst, Third Text and Variations. Editor of 7 books in Danish and three in English: Totalitarian Art and Modernity (ed. w. Jacob Wamberg, 2010), Expect Anything Fear Nothing: The Situationist Movement in Scandinavia and Elsewhere (ed. w. Jakob Jakobsen, 2011) and Cosmonauts of the Future: Texts from the Situationist Movement in Scandinavia and Elsewhere (ed. w. Jakob Jakobsen). Ocassional cultural producer, including the exhibition This World We Must Leave in Aarhus Kunstbygning in 2010 with Jakob Jakobsen, new edition Kunsthall Oslo, 2016, and the play Revolution, with Christian Lollike at Nationaltheatret in Oslo, 2017, S/H in Copenhagen 2018.

Current research

Jeg har færdigredigeret en antologi om avantgarden som protestkultur, der udkom i 2024 på Minor Compositions med bidrag af bl.a. Marina Vishmidt, Esther Leslie, Yves Citton og Abigail Susik. Jeg er i færd med at redigere et nummer af tidsskriftet K&K (sammen med Jonas Ross Kjærgård og Cecilia Sjöholm) om Palæstina, der udkommer foråret 2026. I 2025 udgav jeg The Refusalist International: A Theory of the New Protest Cycle på Polity. Nu har jeg to bogprojekter, jeg er i gang med: Her og andetsteds om kunst og antiimperialisme i 1960'erne og 1970'erne og en bog om fascistisk æstetik historisk og i dag. Derudover arbejder jeg sammen med Carsten Juhl på en antologi om politisk vold. Med Dominique Routhier redigerer jeg en serie om repræsentationskritik på Antipyrine, det tredje bind om modernisme udkommer i foråret 2026. Jakob Jakobsen og jeg fortsætter vores mangeårige samarbejde med en antologi om apokalypse. 

Fra 2019 og fire år frem arbejdede jeg på Aesthetic Protest Cultures: The Avant-Garde after the Avant-Garde, et kollektivt forskningsprojekt, financieret af Novo Nordisk Fondens Kunsthistoriske Udvalg. Det gjorde jeg sammen med James Day og Peer Illner. Resultaterne af dette arbejde inkluderede et dobbeltnummer af K&K om protestkulturer og den førnævnte antologi på Minor Compositions.

Teaching

I foråret 2027 underviser jeg i Kulturteori- og analyse på Litteraturvidenskab, BA, sammen med Anna Ullman og Cecilie Ullerup Schmidt.
