Monica Kujabi is a medical doctor (2017) and PhD student from the University of Copenhagen (2020-2023). Since 2013, she has been involved in maternal health projects in low- and middle-income countries including Sierra Leone, Somaliland and Tanzania. She started first part of specialization in gynecology and obstetrics at Hvidovre University Hospital (1.5 years) and worked at Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Somaliland.
Her PhD study is nested within the PartoMa implementation study, which investigates co-creation of clinical guidelines for childbirth to suit the low resource clinical reality. During her PhD study she focuses on the management of childbirth in resource limited settings, specifically trying to understand and address the dangerous co-existence of too little, too late versus too much too, soon care. Her study area is prolonged labour management with particular focus on oxytocin for labour augmentation. To understand the underlying mechanisms for sub-standard care, she takes a holistic approach including qualitative and quantitative methods. She is interested in co-creation as a sustainable method to develop interventions which are adapted to the context.
Monica is a former program coordinator for Masanga Hospital’s Outreach program (2013-2019) in rural Sierra Leone and now serves a consulting role. She co-developed the “Maternal and Child Community Health Approach” working on empowerment of communities and community solutions for maternal and child health. This includes education of Maternity Agents in rural communities to reduce unmet need for family planning and increase antenatal care and birth by skilled attendance. She also worked with child malnutrition by increasing competencies in measurement of upperarm circumference (MUAC) in rural villages and home management of malnutrition.
