Short presentation

Dr. Niels H Skotte is a research group leader at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology at the University of Copenhagen and affiliated Associate Professor at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, Denmark. He received his PhD degree in Neuroscience from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen. Afterwards he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Michael Hayden at Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, Vancouver, BC, Canada with a focus on developing gene therapy for Huntington’s Disease. He then worked as an assistant professor in the laboratory of Prof. Matthias Mann with a focus on developing biomarkers in biofluids from patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based proteomics.

Dr. Skotte has been working extensively on Huntington’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases for close to 15 years and has played a central role in developing allele-selective anti-sense oligonucleotides, elucidating strategies to limit huntingtin processing by modulating caspase-6 activity, as well as identifying novel biomarkers in plasma, saliva, and cerebrospinal fluid. Dr. Skotte started his own independent research lab in 2022 specialized in molecular and cellular neuropathology, clinical proteomics, and bioinformatics. The research is focused on identifying novel protein alterations in neurodegenerative disorders, validating biomarkers in human and murine biofluids, and defining novel drug targets using mouse models studying murine adult single cell populations from the central nervous system. Currently the Skotte Research Group has several fulltime members including three postdocs, a PhD student, a research assistant, a technician as well as undergraduate students.
