I graduated as a veterinarian in spring 2001 from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural College in Denmark after finishing my Master Thesis on digital dermatitis in Danish dairy cattle. In autumn 2001 I started a PhD thesis on Lameness in Danish dairy cattle. This was the start of exciting journey into claw health, hoof trimming and collaboration with hoof trimmers all over the world. The results from the PhD project were disseminated to the Danish farmers, veterinarian and hoof trimmers through a series of workshops and seminars during the period from 2003-2007 were 15% of the Danish dairy farmers participated.
Through the years I have conducted numerous research projects on lameness and claw health primarily in dairy cattle. I became involved in the Danish hoof trimmer education in 2002 and has been involved ever since. In 2018 I attended an introductory course in White Line Atlas trimming. This opened for new research into the effect of trimming technique. In 2022 I became an Instructor of White Line Atlas Method and member of the League of extraordinary hoof care explorers.
Since 2019 the White Line Atlas method has been taught at the Danish hoof trimmers education.
In 2004-2009 I was involved in the development of a program for digital recording of hoof health for hoof trimmers. It was a Scandinavian project involving breeding associations, farmer association, hoof trimmer associations and universities. The program is free-ware and there is an ongoing process for improving the user face. The work also led to the development of a Nordic claw health atlas for the Scandinavian program and the development of International Claw health atlas, with appendix for digital dermatitis stages and for digital dermatitis associated claw horn lesions in collaboration with hoof health experts from all over the world in collaboration with ICAR. During this period, I have conducted several projects on the quality of hoof health records and how we improve both quality and number of recordings. This has included information to hoof trimmers, farmers and veterinarians. The use of image recognition using AI during trimming is a new research area.
Other areas of my interest are diseases and disorders related to the rumen and abomasum of dairy cattle. This interest was based on the experience form the University Hospital for large Animals, were many admitted dairy cows suffer from primary or secondary conditions affecting their recovery.
Health in dairy calves has become an increasing interest and especially to assess methods for recognizing signs of disease at the preclinical stages and evaluate the appropriate treatment regimens and the potential benefit of timely treatment.
Research into new technologies for monitoring activity and recognition of signs of disease and the use of AI algorithms will be included in my future research activities, both within lameness, hoof lesions, rumen health and calf health.
