Environmental biologist (BSc) and Nature manager (MSc) passionate about the interactions between humans and the physical environment. Currently undertaking a Ph.D., my project delves into the social acceptability of transformative urban green infrastructure planning, design, and management. My research interests revolve around socio-ecological systems in urban and semi-natural environments, natural resource governance, social and ecological sustainability, and just urban planning. I am also a plant nerd.

Working in close collaboration on the CO-CARBON project. Urban green spaces are seen as one potential method to mitigate climate change and its impacts on society. Vegetation and soil store atmospheric carbon, modify local climate and stormwater cycling and impact human well-being. The aim of CO-CARBON is to quantify the carbon storage of green spaces at different urban scales using novel measurements and process-based models at the same time when accounting for other socio-ecological factors, and support practical operations for the multiple planning and management needs of carbon-smart green spaces. The aim is to have carbon-smart green spaces to become a well-recognized part of urban transition at different societal levels. CO-CARBON will bring together atmospheric, soil and social scientists with landscape designers, urban planners, businesses, governmental and national bodies and residents. The project is done at the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, Finnish Meteorological Institute and Häme University of Applied Sciences.

Private gardens can constitute a substantial percentage of the available urban green space for biodiversity in cities. Sustainable Gardening, Near-Nature Gardening, or as we refer to it, Wildlife-friendly Gardening (WFG), aims to invite more biodiversity and natural processes to gardens whilst avoiding the use of aggressive gardening practices and design decisions. Due to the private ownership of domestic gardens, WFG relies on the individual, voluntary action of garden owners. In our master's thesis we explored the values, attitudes and behaviours of garden owners concerning WFG in the Danish context. Further, we identified the barriers hindering it broader reception and implementation. Last but not least, we propose a number of recommendations to promote the acceptance and engagement of WFG in the private garden sphere, which may inspire future private garden governance initiatives.

As part of my education, I am learning about Extensive Green roofs and their benefits. The objective of this project in collaboration is to identify the factors influencing extensive green roof ecosystem service delivery in order to set technical requirements oriented to maximize biodiveristy support, stormwater management and building insulation.

Learning outcomes: analytical and sampling methods within freshwater ecosystems such as phosphates and ammonia water analysis, resazurine (Raz) metabolic activity tracer and field nitrate and 15N additions. Projects I have participated in: NiCUS (Lights and Shadows of the Nitrogen Cycling in Urban Streams), MEDSOUL (Improving the use of blue water resources under high human demand and water scarcity in Mediterranean catchments by one health approach) and BIO-ERODS (Biogeochemistry of erosive material deposition in streams: Impact of particulate deposition upon biofilm carbon cycling).
