Short presentation
Paolo Astorri is Assistant Professor of Legal History at the University of Copenhagen and Lund University and Research Team Leader at the Centre for Privacy Studies. He is also Associate Scholar at the LAWINSEL Project at University College Cork. His research focuses on early modern legal history, particularly the intersections between law and religion, canon law, public law, marriage law, and the regulation of economic relations in Catholic and Protestant Europe.
He received his PhD in Law from KU Leuven and holds degrees in law from the University of Macerata and in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University. Before joining the University of Copenhagen, he was a member of the Junior Research Group on Extrajudicial and Judicial Conflict Resolution at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History in Frankfurt am Main.
Astorri is Co-Principal Investigator of the Swedish Research Council project Secrets to Patents: Trans-Imperial Strategies for Keeping Medicines as Private Assets, 1500–1900 (2025–2029). His monograph Lutheran Theology and Contract Law in Early Modern Germany (ca. 1520–1720) received the REFORC Book Award in 2020, and his work on judges’ private knowledge received the Van Caenegem Prize in 2022. He is Articles Editor of Comparative Legal History.
