My research focuses on the lived welfare state - understood as subjective experiences, life stories and memories in relation to social and educational interventions. I am interested in how people are formed and shaped by social categories and educational interventions, and how they live their lives within changing legal and institutional frameworks. In particular, I explore how individuals in different social situations reflect on and engage with their histories and circumstances in multiple ways, and their creative attempts to reinvent themselves and assert their voices and perspectives in the public sphere.
Specifically, I am working on:
- The Danish welfare history.
- Memory formation, memory work and memory activism among people with lived experiences of institutionalization.
- Transitional justice, official apologies and historical redress in the Danish context.
- Experiences of power and resistance among people with cognitive disabilities living in residential care.
- Ageing, old age and how the elderly deal with the end of life.
- Formation and memory formation in Danish elite boarding schools over time.
- Ethnography and oral history.
