Personal profile

My primary research interests are biophotonics and biophysics studies of reef-building corals and biofilms. I develop experiment-driven multi-physics numerical models to study how corals and biofilms interact with light and hydrodynamics, from cellular- to organism scale. I am a specialist in light-scattering measurements, including optical coherence tomography and digital holotomography, hyperspectral imaging, micro-sensor measurements of light, chemical species and temperature. I enjoy participating in multi-disciplinary, collaborative projects. My long-term aims are to study functional adaptations in nature to modulate light and chemical environment, at nanometers to meters length scale. I hope to apply this knowledge in nature conservation and restoration efforts. I also like to take inspiration from nature to develop sustainable solutions that can be incorporated into consumer products (e.g., displays, solar cells etc.).
