Personal profile

Primary fields of research

My main resarch areas are history of modern pure and applied mathematics and mathematics education at secondary and university level, with focus on history and philosophy of mathematics and mathematical modelling.

I study the history of mathematics from perspectives of past mathematicians, their projects and motivations, situated in certain contexts, at specific places, at certain times, and under particular historical circumstances in order to understand and explain historical processes in the development of mathematics. The mathematical areas include the moment problem, linear inequality theory, the modern theory of convexity, mathematical biology and modelling, game theory, and linear- and nonlinear programming in Operations Research.

In mathematics education and didactics of mathematics my research focuses on the roles of mathematical modelling and of history and philosophy of mathematics in mathematics education. I have researched the role of history and the use of primary sources for inquiry based teaching and learning in mathematics, how to develop students' mathematical modelling competency, how to use  modelling for supporting students' concept formation, and problem oriented teaching and learning in mathematics and science.
