Tobias's primary research focuses on combining technical research with clinical science to improve diagnostics and minimally invasive treatments. He is the research director of the Surgical Ultrasound Research Group in Copenhagen (SURGiC), an interdisciplinary group comprising both medical doctors and technical engineers. His award-winning research group has also developed several innovative solutions, filed patent applications, and established a spinout company called 3Sonic. Tobias is also the Coordinating Associate Professor for the Technical University Hospital of Greater Copenhagen (TUH) and President of the Danish Society of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DSDU). He is the course director of the Copenhagen International Head & Neck Ultrasound Course, a yearly course he initiated five years ago, which has since become the world-leading head and neck ultrasound course, having trained over 200 doctors from more than 30 countries. Tobias has raised over 4 million EUROs in competitive funding and led several multicenter randomized clinical trials, including over 30,000 participants. He has won several prizes for his research, which has been published in the highest surgical and medical journals.
Tobias is the course director for a new course, "Data in Medicine" (5 ECTS), for medical students (2nd semester, bachelor's degree) at the University of Copenhagen. As course director, he was responsible for developing the curriculum for the new course that aimed to introduce medical students to the use of clinical data and new digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence in medicine. He led the course to successful implementation as part of the new curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Medicine during the spring semester of 2025, with 296 medical students enrolled. Tobias is also an experienced pre- and post-graduate teacher and has been developing technology-enhanced learning materials for students. He made educational websites and online videos with > 300,000 views, including a World Health Organization (WHO) clinical guide.
