Short presentation

My research focuses on microbial community interactions in biofilms, polymicrobial infections, and the early life human microbiome.

We utilize clinically relevant in vitro and in vivo models combined with molecular techniques to study social behaviors and pathogen virulence in different types of infections. So far I have focused on diabetic chronic wounds, burn/trauma injuries, and abscesses, with P. aeruginosa, S. aureusA. actinomycetemcomitans, or S. gordonii as model systems.

In tandem, my research in collaboration with COPSAC (Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood) focuses on understanding how the microbiome during early life is influenced by environmental factors such as delivery mode, season of birth, presence of older sibling in household, living environment, diet and antibiotic consumption, and how these factors associate with microbiome maturation and the risk of developing asthma, eczema and allergy later in life.
