Abstract
A case is presented of fatal endocarditis in a seven-year old mixed breed mare, due to Actinobacillus equuli subspecies equuli. The endocarditis diagnosis was made by clinical examination, echocardiography and blood tests. Post mortem a diagnosis of chronic valvular endocarditis involving the aortic semilunar valves and endarteriitis of the aorta was stated. The diagnostic workup, microbiology and post mortem findings are described. Bacterial endocarditis should be considered in horses with clinical signs of weight loss, fever, cardiac murmur and tachycardia.
