Changing life perspectives: Conversations from a microtopia of integrated arts education in a South African primary school

Abstract

Colliding in the pandemic year 2020, four years of integrated arts educational work in a South African primary school class is nearing its end. Two of the artist-educator-researchers involved in the project share their conversations as they have taken place during 2020, however sometimes interrupted by events in the reality and using various formats such as WhatsApp, email and talking while sitting together in a café. The article is based on what they call ‘active listening conversations’ illustrating theoretical underpinnings, performative methodological and pedagogic choices. Through this approach they discuss what value an integrated arts educational approach that their group has developed might have to the school community, especially the children that formed part of this project, and what value it might have to them and their professional fields of practice and research.
