Abstract
The occurrences of the term "poor in Spirit" in two Dead Sea Scrolls are investigated in order to cast light on the similar expression in the Gospel of Matthew. It is argued that the expression does not denote any "spiritual" quality such as humility, but rather the affiliation of the concrete economically poor to the "spiritual" community of the Qumranite and Christian communities respectively.
