Abstract

Practice theory in International Relations has been a key innovator in concept formation, ontology and methodology since the 2010s. Grounding research in ‘organized patterns of doing and sayings’ (practice) as the core unit of analysis has brought tacit, everyday activities and relations, but also materiality and bodies, back into theoretical conversations. Concepts such as ‘field’, ‘assemblage’ and ‘community of practice’ enriched the disciplinary vocabulary and offered new gateways to reflect on knowledge, structures, change and normativity. In its deep empirical orientation, practice-oriented methodologies have opened up new pathways for seeking proximity to and engaging with the practitioners of world politics. Contemporary research showcases the rich life-worlds of diplomats, development workers and bureaucrats, while new theory debates reflect on concepts such as ritual, infrastructure and visuality.
