Abstract

In the prevention and treatment of diseases using pharmacotherapy, the drug of choice is obviously a key factor. However, the site and duration of drug delivery, the rate of drug release, and the pharmacokinetic and side effect proles of the drug all play pivotal roles in the success of a medical intervention. It is for these reasons that the development of suitable dosage forms or drug delivery systems (DDS; these terms will be used interchangeably in this chapter) is strictly required for any drug, in order to allow the safe, effective, and reliable administration of drugs to patients.
