Sojourner passers and the uncertain ethnic body: the image of Arab men in Israel

Abstract

This article analyses the image of the Arab uncertain bodies through introducing the performance of what I define as sojourner passing: that is, an abrupt and temporary event limited in space and time in order to gain access to sexual, financial or militarised goals. In Israel, which has a strict ethnic division, sojourner passing is a potential performance of passing that is less threatening for ethnic identities. Thus, in that sense sojourner passing is not a quest for a transformation of oneself and one’s identity, but a temporary act for profitability.
