Abstract

In the story known as the Contest for the Prebend of Amun, a young priest challenges king Petubastis over his decision to give a certain prebend to his son, prince Khayris. It is argued that his statement ‘It belongs to me, it belongs to my father’ represents a formal legal claim with reference to the Legal Compendium of Papyrus Mattha, where the same statement similarly occurs several times.
