Abstract

The article discusses the epistemological underpinnings of source criticism in classic edition (by Kr. Erselv) and later versions. Drawing on the linguistic turn, source criticism can be read as historian’s striving to eliminate the sign-character of the sources, and turn them into presence. However, the epistemological question of the subject – deferred in classic source criticism, and later discussed as the central problem for historians in the 1970s – has been privileged in the reception of the Linguistic Turn by Danish historians. The author argues that to make an assessment of the potentials of the Linguistic Turn in history, the central role of the subject in historiography may need to be challenged.
